The Adventure Begins: Preparation Time

And the adventure begins... We're two short weeks away from our cross-country driving adventure, and it's preparation time.  Filled with excitement, anticipation, and just a hint of apprehension!  I'm no fool -- I watched the Oprah/Gayle road trip with rapt attention.

A few reflections based upon lessons learned from Gayle and Oprah:

1) Gayle doesn't know how to read a map.  I think we're okay on this one.  With our AAA Trip-Tik, (AAA man:"This is the biggest Trip-Tik I've ever seen.  Where in the world are you going?"), we should be able to figure out where we're going.  I must admit though that map-reading is not one of my strengths either!  As long as the top of the map is pointing in the direction we're going (does that make sense to anyone else?), I should be okay.  Thank God for GPS! Check.

2) Gayle sings, Oprah wants quiet.  That one's okay -- Mimi & I enjoy the same music, and are loading up the iPod.  I like the Gayle/Oprah compromise -- whoever is driving gets to decide what to listen to (I hope this rule also extends to the temperature in the car, since Mimi's always saying, "Is anyone else boiling hot?"). Check.

3) Oprah and Gayle didn't realize until they'd reached Kansas that they should have packed a "yum-yum box" filled with drinks and snacks.  Got that covered.  Check.

4) Oprah doesn't like to drive across bridges.  Mimi once remarked, "When you drive over a high bridge, isn't it crazy how you sometimes think you'll just turn the wheel and drive off the edge?".  Okay, Mimi isn't driving across bridges.  Check.

So, here we are, making lists, assembling first-aid kits, shopping for camping equipment (that story's for another day -- we'll see if that happens!), assembling a layering wardrobe, making a few reservations, and leaving the rest to chance and serendipity!  The road awaits...
